I swore I would Not do that to myself again. I used to have a mare named Allie and a dog named Callie. It would get confusing - for all of us. I sounded like a mom of 4 boys, trying to yell at one of them and going through the entire roster of names! Many years ago, I got a new lesson horse. her name was Katie. But I had 3 girls taking lessons named Katie. I was already tripping over calling one Kate, one Katie and the other Katherine! We renamed the horse Sadie!
I really have too many L named horses. It is my own fault. All of Alissando's foals are named something that starts with A and preferably something that starts AL. There has been Always, Allianace, Allegro, Altitude, Almay, Alliluia, All Lit up, All of me, Al Latifa, and a long list of others. Their barn names have been lance, Lego, Louie, Litty, Latifa. I sometimes want to just wander around the barn going La La La!!!
It gets even worse when you factor in boarders horses. Once we were caring for Two horses named Cinqo at the same time! I wound up calling them Red Cinqo and Black Cinqo. I also have two very similar Looking horses at the ranch. Mystic and Eclypse. Those POOR horses, I twist their names up ALL the time! I don't know why I can't get those two names straight, but other people at the ranch make the same mistake!
Names are funny things. People try to give their children unique names that won't turn into nicknames. It never works. the same is true of horses and dogs. The breeder might give a colt a wonderful Polysyllabic title, but the owner winds up calling him Bub! I really try to give each horse a special name that also reflects who they are. The Navajo were known for naming horses for traits they wished the horse to have - Sure foot, clear eye. I always try to remember to name a horse Sweetheart and Not Rowdy!
But the L thing seems to be a curse. I must like L. recently a mare foaled here - her name is Larkin. I started calling her baby Lil - short for Live a Little. What WAS I thinking??? I have added another L horse to the roster! I could have named her Minny, or heck Susie for that matter. Noooo - I had to give her an L name.
Oh well, I am just going to L. that is all there is to it.
