My original plan was for Bri to get up on Corey. I stopped getting on the green ones about 2 years ago. I am 56 yrs old, and I don’t bounce the way I used to. Now when a horse knocks me around, I am sore for days. Ibuprofen and Arnica gel are my friends! But after yesterday, with Corey SO calm and because he trusts ME, I decided to be the one to ride him.
Time to mount up. I had Bri hold him and I did a series of hops and partial lay overs. He was moving occasionally, but only because he was staggering under my weight. I never understand people who get on a horse for the first time and push it to trot and canter, riding for 30 minutes or more. The poor horse has No idea how to carry that weight. My goal is to gradually teach Corey that he can walk and carry me, Then we will add trotting. This will be as stress free a training program as possible. In fact, I consider myself his ‘educator’ not his ‘trainer’. He has no idea how to act around humans, and I will Not punish him for ignorance. I need to give him a ‘job description’ and that is what I am doing . I also want him to know that I might ask him to work To his limit, but I will not push him Over his limit. (this is a quote from Walter Zettl)
But that is dreaming too far forward. Right now I am just happy to have sat upon Corrigan and we were all calm and happy. Who could ask for more?
